Hints to Lower Fat in Your Diet There are several areas in our lives that if changed
can make a noticeable difference in our weight. Exercise, cutting out or greatly
reducing empty calorie foods, increasing vegetables, fruits, grains and lowering
the amount of fat we eat.
The following are time proven hints to help lower fat in your meals and snacks:
- take the skin off chicken before baking or cooking and buy leaner cuts of meats.
- drain the fat from hamburger well and if possible buy leaner ground beef.
- use a spritzer filled with olive oil to spray frying pans and baking sheets.
- Replace margarine and butter with oil in most muffin, breads and cake recipes.
- To further cut the fat replace half of the oil with applesauce or mashed ripe bananas
or even canned pumpkin. You might have to play around with the recipe a bit.
- Switch to lower fat or no fat alternatives in sour cream, milk, yogurt, cheese,
cottage cheese, ice cream etc.
- Instead of the usual butter, mayo, sour cream condiments make your food more flavorful
by zesting things up with salsa, lemon juice/slices, spices and herbs, mustard,
vinegar and horseradish.
- Check the labels on packaging. You would be surprised how much fat is contained
in food
- Avoid or seldom use recipes or packaged foods that have cream sauces or fried coatings.
As you begin to use these tips, it will open your eyes to other fat cutting ideas.
Some fats are good for you and your body does require them. Olive oil, canola oil,
natural occurring fats in cold water fish like salmon, the oil found in almonds,
walnuts etc are all wonderful within a certain quantity. Whenever possible cut the
saturated fats from chicken, beef, shortening etc out and eat the good fats. Your
body will function better and you will see the extra pounds start to drop away.
