Menopause can be seen positively as a milestone in a woman’s life. She has gone
through changes from childhood to adolescence then again through the child bearing
years and now is a new phase in life. Although like the other phases a woman’s body
goes through changes and the hormones fluctuate, so it is through this stage. Here
is some help in reducing the effects of these fluctuations.
- Exercise: walking, swimming, playing with the kids will benefit your heart, bones
and your outlook on life.
- Eat high fibre carbohydrates: avoid empty calorie carbs and select whole grain pastas
and breads, dates, plums, bananas, even green leafy veggies. By eating these types
of food you will avoid or lessen the mood swings as well as improve your energy
level.
- Calcium foods such as low fat cheese, milk, yogurt etc as well as almonds, eating
canned salmon bones and all, broccoli and green leafy veggies.
- Vitamin D type foods because they help absorb the calcium. Examples are eggs, fish
oils, fortified milk.
- Soy products which have plant estrogens such as yams, brussell sprouts, soybeans,
tofu, tempeh and soy milk etc. These will reduce the symptoms of menopause such
as the hot flushes and other inconveniences.
- A Time for Relaxing: unwind by sitting and thinking of a favorite calm place or
by a bath or a massage.
