Cravings occur for several different reasons. It can be because you haven’t eaten
lately and your blood sugars are low. Avoid these types of cravings by eating something
every three hours.
Sometimes cravings are due to overdoing the sugar the previous few days and then
the next day having eaten very little of it. Your body is waiting for its next dose
of sugar.
Vegetarians often have cravings for sweets if they don’t eat enough protein or other
nutrients found in meat.
It also could be because of nutrient deficiencies. This can be especially true for
women in their forties and fifties during the pre-menopausal and menopausal stages
of life.
If a craving does strike, try to find out exactly what you are craving. Sometimes
it is obvious and other times it can be narrowed down to something that is as simple
as a drink of water. Here are the usual suspects: bread-type (danishes, muffins,
cinnamon buns, cakes), salty, spicy, sweet (chocolate), sour and crunchy. Knowing
this will stop you from raiding all the cupboards and eat what you specifically
desire. Eat a smaller portion of it, slowly enjoying every mouthful of it.
